Osteoarthritis and Joint Pain

Osteoarthritis is also known as the degenerative joint disease. In osteoarthritis, some areas of our bones are exposed due to the loss of cartilage in a joint; this is very common with old people because cartilages soften as a person gets older. When a joint already lacks cartilage and the bone is exposed, the exposed bones would start scraping each other every time a person moves resulting to pain.

Aside from old age, osteoarthritis can also be linked to trauma, congenital abnormalities, and even obesity. Obese women, especially those over the age of forty, are at a high risk for developing osteoarthritis. The added weight pressure on the bones and muscles can contribute to the pain. To help eliminate these pains, an obese person should eat more fruits and vegetables; he should also increase his water intake to up to 8 glasses a day and create an exercise program to maintain muscle and bone activity and to lose the excess weight.

Other causes of joint pains
Trauma can also be a cause of joint pains. This may also include SI joint pain. The development of arthritis could come from an accident or an injury. The swelling or soreness may occur when the cartilages are affected or damaged. Bacterial infections and some chronic diseases such as Lupus or SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematous) are also contributors and causes of joint pains. In a virus attack, the joints become inflamed causing pain and soreness. The pain will only disappear once the virus has been treated.

When pain is present, allow that area of your body to rest and eventually, heal. If there is injury, a person can go through physical therapy. To expedite the healing, you could also take medicines such as ibuprofen to relieve the pain. It is not advisable, though, to rely on these medicines because they come with side effects. Only take pain killers if the pain is already unbearable or see a doctor.
