Can AI be a teammate? Human-centered strategies for health IT leaders

Although clinician burnout is commonly viewed as a workforce challenge, it’s also a patient safety risk with system-wide consequences. As a registered nurse and health IT consultant, I’ve worked closely with healthcare leaders on clinical optimization, strategic planning, and change management, and I’ve seen how emotional exhaustion and inefficient workflows lead to near misses, delayed responses, and breakdowns in care coordination. Alert fatigue and inadequate training and support structures also make burnout a daily reality for many frontline providers.  

The stakes are high. Research shows physician burnout can double the risk of patient safety incidents, and contribute to up to 10.6% of serious medical errors. For healthcare IT leaders, this underscores the urgent need to deploy technology solutions, such as AI and automation, that reduce cognitive load, streamline documentation, and support clinicians at the point of care.  

While my colleague, Dr. Craig Joseph, Nordic’s Chief Medical Officer, highlighted the value of low-tech strategies, it's equally important to explore how thoughtfully implemented health IT innovations can complement these approaches and drive deeper, systemic changes. 

How AI and automation can reduce clinician burden 

As I recently noted in my interview with Patient Safety Monitor Journal, AI and automation hold serious promise when thoughtfully implemented to enhance clinical judgement. Tools like ambient voice transcription and AI-powered documentation assistants have the potential to reduce clerical burdens, allowing clinicians to focus more on patient care than paperwork.  

Smart clinical decision support systems that deliver relevant, timely recommendations at the point of care can ease cognitive load during tasks like prescribing or ordering labs. Automating routine administrative tasks, such as scheduling or refill approvals, can help streamline workflows and free up mental bandwidth.  

An American Medical Association (AMA) survey of 1,080 physicians, including self-described “tech adopters” and “tech averse” individuals, reveals that diagnostic ability (76%), work efficiency (69%), clinical outcomes (61%), and improving care coordination, patient convenience, and patient safety (56%) are the areas where physicians think AI would be most helpful. Respondents were excited about the possibility of using AI in these cases: 

  • Documentation of billing codes, medical charts, or visit notes: 54% 
  • Automation of insurance prior authorization: 48% 
  • Creation of discharge instructions, care plans, or progress notes: 43% 

However, not all technology improves care. In the same AMA survey, 39% of physicians expressed concern about the influence AI could have on the patient-physician relationship and 41% with patient privacy. Poorly designed AI, such as interruptive pop-ups, irrelevant suggestions, or untrained templates, can worsen clinician burnout. Successful implementation depends on clinician-led governance, iterative feedback, and continuous monitoring to ensure tools advance rather than hinder care delivery.

Transparency in AI tools is essential for clinician trust and adoption. To be truly effective, an AI system should clearly explain its recommendations, the data sources behind them, and its confidence levels. When designed well, AI can act as a collaborative teammate that supports clinical design-making without replacing it.   

Clinicians need to understand the “why” behind AI-generated outputs to feel confident in using them. Embedding feedback loops into clinical workflows is a critical step.  Empowering frontline staff to rate, override, or comment on AI suggestions improves the tool over time, reinforces clinician autonomy, and helps hospitals and health systems safeguard patient care.  

Best practices for clinician-led AI adoption in health systems  

Clinician input should guide every stage of AI implementation in healthcare. The most effective strategies begin with: 

  • A clinician-led governance group 
  • A solid understanding of clinical use cases 
  • Rigorous usability testing 
  • Ongoing refinement based on real-world workflows 

To position AI as a true clinical teammate, it must be designed with and for clinicians. When frontline voices shape the development and deployment of technology, organizations are better equipped to ensure that AI enhances care delivery rather than disrupts it.
